Thoughts, are they hindering your success?

Thoughts, are they hindering your success?

Our thoughts help us achieve what we want in life, it all starts with our thoughts.  The power of our thoughts influence our feelings and our results.  Bad days can happen as a result of our thoughts.  Thinking you are going to have a “bad day” will likely to turnout to be.

Thoughts create a successful day.  How often do you wake up in the morning and say to yourself “today will be a fantastic day.”  Do you consider what will make your day fantastic and what results you are hoping to achieve.  Positive thoughts create good feelings and actions which produce fantastic results.  What is important is the action would have originated from a thought.

How to tackle difficult conversations

As a Manager there are times when you get involved in difficult conversations and it can be tough to handle them well. This can be difficult because of the message and sometimes it difficult because of the person you need to have the conversation with. Managing people is one of the most challenging aspects of a Manager’s role and difficult conversations that are not managed well can cause tension between the employee and the Manager and can sometimes escalate to grievances.

What’s important is not to shy away from these conversations, whether this be that a member of the team is not performing to the expected levels, or your Manager isn’t providing you with the support you require, whatever the difficult message it helps to plan for the conversation.

Emotions Drive Decisions

Emotions Drive Decisions

Have you ever considered how your emotions drive your decisions at work?  It’s an interesting question.  We all make lots of decisions every day, what to wear for the day ahead, what to have for breakfast to considering how to tackle a challenge at work.  Some of these decisions are made unconsciously and perhaps without too much thought, but what happens when you are faced with an important decision, what do you take into consideration? And what emotions are driving these decisions?

Wellbeing and Resilience – How do you find the balance when faced with change?

According to the Oxford Dictionary the definition of wellbeing is “the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy” and resilience can be defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties.”  Sounds quite straight forward but how is wellbeing and resilience managed in the workplace? What is your definition of happiness?

What is your definition of happiness?

Over the past few weeks I’ve been thinking alot about happiness.  What makes us feel happy?  How do we define what happiness means?  How does the perception of our happiness influence our career choices, job and our personal life?

As you would expect happiness can mean different things to different people.  The question is, can you define it to one area of your life?  Probably not.  Interestingly, reflecting back to when I was at school I never asked myself the question of “what will I choose to do with my life?”  I thought about my career but it probably stops there.

World Cancer Day – How does your business manage cancer in the workplace?

4th February –  World Cancer Day unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer. According to Macmillian, during 2015 there was an estimated 2.5 million people in the UK who had a cancer diagnosis – and I was one of them.  You think “it won’t happen to me”, yet there isn’t a person I know who hasn’t been impacted or affected by cancer. Whether that be a member of the family, close friend or work colleague.

Just what does a HR Consultant do anyway?

Just what does a HR Consultant do anyway?

I recently attended a career evening at a local secondary school where students could ask questions about my role as a Human Resource (HR) Consultant and career.  Many students didn’t really understand the term HR, and to be honest looking back when I was at school I wouldn’t have either!  One student thought I worked at the hospital as a Consultant.  Of course I couldn’t answer any medical questions!

Do you give yourself time to think?

Do you give yourself time to think?

Time is priceless. There isn’t a person I know that hasn’t said “I wish there were more hours in the day” and “I don’t have time to….”

We live in an environment where the pace of life has increased.  Emails can be accessed 24 hours a day, the working day is rarely done within the hours of 9am to 5pm and expectations to improve performance, productivity and stretch targets are on the increase.

What changes are you planning to make during 2016?

What changes are you planning to make during 2016?

At this time of year I always like to reflect over the past 12 months and look forward to what the New Year brings.  2015 has been a significant year of change for me personally.  My cancer diagnosis was an unexpected shock which turned my life upside down and whilst I had no control over these changes, it has given me the opportunity to set up the business (something I’ve wanted to do for years!).  I’ve finally made the move from the comfort of employment to the unknown of running a business (which feels great!).

Dealing with change positively in the workplace

Dealing with change positively in the workplace

We’ve all been there, an appointment drops in your calendar titled “Business Update Meeting.”  The content is even more vague, “We would like to invite you to a business update meeting on date and time, please confirm your attendance.”  That’s it.  There was no warning of this meeting, it had not been mentioned at all over the past few days, or come to think of it, the last month, yet the whole team has been invited, and it’s off site….
